The Challenge

A United States based pharmaceutical company was looking for ways to streamline
the data collection process of clinical trials. Data collection is critical to manage and
monitor the field tests in a timely and cost effective manner. The company evaluated
and tried different electronic data capture alternatives; but, none were compatible with various environments of the clinical trials. The current paper method of collecting
information was unorganized, inaccessible and time consuming. They would often not
have access to the data for 12-15 months which was not ideal given the importance of
the data. The Field Researchers and their Regional Directors had to revert to faxes
and other manual means so that everyone could review the data simultaneously. Data entry was accomplished by having highly trained people manually aggregate the
data and then key enter it into a spreadsheet.

The Solution

ExpeData® Digital Writing Platform (EDWP) is the perfect solution to address data
collection challenges. The solution includes a digital pen and digitally patterned
forms. The field books are pre-printed and look identical to the forms used previously.
The experience for the Field Researcher in terms of recording data is virtually
unchanged.

The Field Researchers collect information by simply writing on the digitally patterned
paper with digital pens. At the end of the day, they dock the pens into a cradle
attached to their PC. The data is transmitted to the EDWP where it is converted to data and sent to the data management system for additional processing. Organized
reports can easily be pulled from the data management system as needed.

The Results

Since incorporating the ExpeData Digital Writing Platform into the data collection
process, researchers have access to information in a matter of hours that used to
take 12-15 months. This provides the company with a competitive advantage in the clinical trials market. The EDWP allows problems to be identified and corrected
before a protocol deviation becomes uncorrectable. This saves valuable time and
