Ohio police department automates the data collection of accident reports

The Challenge

Police officers on the scene of an accident are required to complete a report explaining what happened and to record various information. At the end of their shift, or when time permits, the police officer enters the accident report information into a centralized database. The report is then scanned and stored in a centralized repository. This traditional process is time-consuming with several steps to create usable data and make it available for an investigation. Police officers need a way to collect accident information without being distracted and that allows complete awareness of their surroundings. A keyboard or PDA challenges the officers’ peripheral vision and puts them at risk.

The Solution

ExpeData® Digital Writing Platform (EDWP) is the perfect solution to address data collection challenges. Accident report forms are pre-printed on digitally patterned paper that looks identical to the forms previously used by the officers. The police officers are provided with digital pens and collect information by simply writing on the form with the digital pen. At the end of the day, instead of manually entering the data, they dock the pen into a cradle attached to a PC. The data is transmitted to the EDWP, where it is converted to data and sent to the centralized database. Organized reports can easily be pulled from the database as needed and high resolution images of the original handwritten report are created for archiving.

The Results

Since incorporating the ExpeData Digital Writing Platform into the accident report process, data entry time for police officers and administrators has been reduced, speeding up the process. But most importantly the accident information is readily available for investigation.
